Tom Bernhardt was a dominant defenseman who played a key role on back-to-back Big Rivers Conference Championship teams his sophomore and junior seasons and then captained a team that won nine of ten games down the stretch before losing to Superior in the Sectional finals. Tom was named 1st Team All-Big Rivers Conference as a junior and earned 2nd Team honors as a senior. "Bernie" is still in the Top 30 All-Time Scorers at Memorial. Tom went on to play college hockey at UW-Eau Claire from 1988-90 and then began his coaching career.

Tom Bernhardt served as an assistant coach at his alma mater for three years from 1990-93 and then served as an assistant under Tom Kuklinski from 1993 through the middle of the '96-'97 campaign. He became only the third head coach in Eau Claire North history in January 1997. He coached the Huskies for over a decade. His 2005-06 team lost only twice on the ice, to Eau Claire Memorial and to State Champion University School of Milwaukee in the WIAA State Tournament. The team's official record was amended to 7-17 due to forfeits.
