Kelly's 15 wins in the 1980-81 season were a school record, though later broken by Cory Wright and Justin Strehlau. He was named First Team All-State by Hockey Unlimited (along with State Player of the Year teammate Steve Blodgett). He also earned All-Northwest Conference Honors. He led the state in wins, save percentage, and goals against average. He was the Northwest Hockey Conference Player of the Year and the WJJK Radio Eau Claire Player of the Year in 1981-82
Kelly was involved in perhaps the greatest "pitchers' duel" in school history on February 12th, 1981. He and Chippewa Falls netminder John LaCasse battled to a 0-0 overtime tie. The Huskies outshot the Cardinals 54-20, but neither side could put the puck in the net
