Jacob played one season as a regular on the blue line for Memorial as a freshman. He then played for the USA NTDP team in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  After a stellar career with the Wisconsin Badgers. Jake was drafted in the 2012 NHL Entry draft by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2nd round with the 44th overall pick. He signed a three-year deal with the Sabres after completing his junior season at Wisconsin. He was named 1st Team All-Big Ten and led the Badgers to the first-ever Big Ten Championship. Buffalo Sabres’ second-round selection (44th overall) in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Signed a three-year, entry-level contract NHL contract with Buffalo on April 2, 2014.

CAREER2012-13: Tallied 21 points on three goals and 18 assists in 38 games for Wisconsin… Led all Badgers defensemen in points and assists on his way to being named a Third-Team All-WCHA selection… Was a WCHA All-Academic pick and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors… Helped Wisconsin to a 22-13-7 record, giving the program its 35th 20-win campaign, including its third in the last four years, its 12th WCHA playoff title by capturing the Broadmoor Trophy and its 24th official NCAA tournament appearance… Finished tied for 10th in scoring among WCHA blueliners with 15 points in conference play while his 21 points overall placed him tied for 12th among all NCAA defensemen...
