John O'Brien was a "gamer." Dennis Fox and Jason Larson had higher scoring numbers in Memorial's first few seasons, but O'Brien battled and usually found a way to have an impact on a game. By his senior season, "O'B" was the leading scorer on the Abes and was voted All-Conference and 3rd Team All-State. He played college hockey at UW-Eau Claire. The two main rinks at the Hobbs Municipal Ice Center were later named in honor of John O'Brien's dad, Dick O'Brien and his college coach, Wally Akervik.
