Steve O'Dell was one of the top high school defensemen in Wisconsin. He was a model of consistency and work ethic. O'Dell could play physical, but also saw the ice well and had an accurate shot. In his senior year, he was named first team All-BRC and first team All-Northwest Wisconsin. "O'D" also played college hockey at UW-Eau Claire, where he was a four-year letterman.
