B
BADREDD. Runty male fox. Formerly known as Little Redd or just Redd. He claimed his father was "Reddblade, Warlord of the Northern Mountains," but he was most likely lying or exaggerating. He was the youngest member of Burrad's vermin band. He seized chieftainship of the band after Skrodd and Dargle killed each other. He was bumbling and incompetent, but the other vermin put up with him because he was easily to manipulate. After he was humiliated by Raga Bol at Redwall, Flinky took over the chieftainship. Badredd fled with them southward. (LH)
BALECLAW. Searat in Raga Bol's crew. Killed by Lonna at Redwall. (LH)
BEETLEBUTT. Rickety old boat piloted by Garfo Trok. (LH)
BELL AND BADGER ROCKS. Notable rock formations near the site of Loamhedge. (MT, LH)
BIRUG. Tall, brownish-white male rat. High "Kappin" of the Darrats. Carries a long spear. (LH)
BLOWFLY. Ugly, obese male searat in Raga Bol's crew. He carried a whip. He was killed by Lonna near Redwall. (LH)
BRAGOON. Male otter. Five seasons older than his brother, Toran. He was best friends with Sarobando since Dibbunhood, and in fact was born on the same day as she, one hour after her. The two caused legendary mischief while growing up at Redwall. He was Skipper of otters for while before he quit to go adventuring with Saro. He learned sword fighting from a Long Patrol hare. He carried the Sword of Martin on the quest to Loamhedge. He died at Saro's side, fighting the forces of Kharanjul at the great gorge. (LH)
BRIGGY, LOG-A-LOG. Bearded male shrew. Father of Jigger. Leader of the Guoraf. He carries a warclub named Aggie and uses a monocle for reading. (LH)
BUBBUB. Small, mute sand-lizard. He has been Toobledum's pet since he was very small. He is friendly with strangers and enjoys being petted. (LH)
BUFFLE. Male shrew Dibbun of Redwall. He was unintelligible to most due to his extreme youth, but Sister Setiva grew to understand him--and scold him for what he said! (LH)
BURCHA GLUGG. Darrat phrase meaning "good food"--an ominous prospect, given their cannibal tendencies! (LH)
BURNEY. Mole of Redwall. (LH)
BURRAD. Fat male weasel. He carried a bone-handled cutlass. He was leader of a small band of vermin in northern Mossflower, as was his father before him. He was accidentally killed by Skrodd in a scuffle with Bragoon. (LH)
BUTEO. Male honey buzzard. He is very protective of "his" stretch of river in northeastern Mossflower. In order to pass him, travelers must answer his riddles. Fortunately he is easy to outwit. (LH)

CARRUL, ABBOT. Skinny old male mouse with small eyeglasses. He was friends with Portula since Dibbunhood, taught Toran when he was a Dibbun, and succeeded Phredd as Abbot of Redwall. He later retired to become the Abbey Gatekeeper, sharing those duties with Phredd until the latter's death. Fenna became Abbess after his retirement. (LH)
CAVERN HOLE. Cozy, informal meeting and dining area in Redwall Abbey, down from Great Hall.
CHAKKA. Searat in Raga Bol's crew. Killed at Redwall. (LH)
COAST RAIDERS. Name given to searats like Raga Bol by the otters living in northeastern Mossflower. (LH)
COSBRO. Ancient male rabbit living in Darrat territory. He lived alone in a cleverly camouflaged hollow log. His ancestors lived near Loamhedge and fled north from the plague just as the Abbey's residents did. (LH)
CRINKTAIL. Female stoat in the same vermin band as Burrad and Badredd. Mate of Flinky. Her name comes from the fact that her tail is shaped like the letter Z. She is a good cook. (LH)
CULLO. Searat in Raga Bol's crew. Killed by Lonna at Redwall. (LH)

DARGLE. Hefty male rat in Burrad's vermin band. He was killed by Skrodd in a dispute over chieftainship. (LH)
DARRATS. Tribe of semi-primitive rats in Mossflower. They wear clothes made of leaves and shrubs and have purple tattoos. They are feared for their cannibalism. When Bragoon and his traveling companions encountered them, their leader was Hemper Figlugg. (LH)

FIGALOK TWIGBENDA. Elderly female squirrel. She is a member of a colony of squirrels living in a large tree in northeastern Mossflower. She wore a russet and yellow tunic. She is skilled in a sort of primitive chiropractic technique. She helped Lonna Bowstripe on his journey to find Raga Bol. (LH)
FIRZIN. Male searat in Raga Bol's crew. Killed at Redwall. (LH)
FLINKY. Clever male stoat in the same vermin band as Burrad and Badredd. Mate of Crinktail. Flinky sang and composed many mocking impromptu ballads and poems. He was also skilled at lying and flattery, and a decent cook. He was the leader of the vermin band after they escape from Raga Bol at Redwall. (LH)

He wore an old iron helmet that resembles a cooking pot and captained the boat Beetlebutt. He was friends with Shoredog's holt, and helped Lonna on his journey to find Raga Bol. (LH)

GERMAINE. Female mouse. Last Abbess of Loamhedge Abbey. With Martin the Warrior, co-founder of Redwall Abbey. (MF, LL)
GLIMBO. Fat male searat with one blind eye. First mate of Raga Bol. Killed by Lonna near Redwall. (LH)
GORNAT. Male searat in Raga Bol's crew. Killed by Lonna at Redwall. (LH)
GRANDMOTHER BRAEBUCK. (Last name assumed.) Female mountain hare. Grandmother of Hortwill and Martha. She brought her grandchildren to Redwall after vermin killed everyone else in their northern colony, and died from exhaustion at the Abbey gates. (LH)
GRAWN. Old male badger. Adoptive father of Lonna Bowstripe. Killed by Raga Bol on the coast of northeastern Mossflower. (LH)
GREAT HALL. Large meeting area in Redwall Abbey. Inside is a large tapestry chronicling the abbey's history.
GRIML. Male searat in Raga Bol's crew. Friend of Deadtooth. Killed at Redwall. (LH)
GUORAF. Guerilla Union of Roving and Fighting Shrews. An offshoot of the Guosim in southern Mossflower. (LH)
GURVEL. Old female mole. She was Head Cook at Redwall when Bragoon and Saro were Dibbuns, but later went into semi-retirement, serving as assistant cook under Toran. She was affectionately known as "Grandmum Gurvel," especially by Dibbuns. (LH)

HALFCHOP. Male rat in the same vermin band as Burrad and Badredd. He was missing a paw. At Redwall, he was hit in the face by one of Junty's slingstones, and after that he couldn't speak except to mimic the noise of the stone hitting him, "Kachunk!" He was friends with Plumnose. (LH)
HANGCLAW. Male searat in Raga Bol's crew. Carried a dagger. Killed at Redwall. (LH)
HEMPER FIGLUGG. Huge old male rat whose fur is almost all white, with a few brown specks. Has a shrill voice. Chieftain of the Darrats. (LH)
HORTWILL LONGBLADE BRAEBUCK ("HORTY"). Male mountain hare. Two seasons older than his sister, Martha. They and their grandmother were the only survivors of a vermin attack on their colony in the northlands. He was best friends with Fenna and Springald while growing up at Redwall, and they went questing together to Loamhedge in search of a cure for Martha's paralysis. He was careless, boastful and sometimes selfish in his youth, but the quest caused him to mature greatly. Horty later took Raga Bol's scimitar and followed Lonna to Salamandastron, where he grew a "bristling military mustache" and became a Captain in the Long Patrol. He was admired by the young hares under his command. (LH)

JERBILRATS. Tribe of small, goldish-brown rodents with long tails, white-furred stomachs and large, dark eyes. They live in the deserts north of Loamhedge and are hostile to travelers. (LH)
JIBOA. Jerchief of the Jerbilrats. He was briefly held prisoner by Bragoon, Saro and their companions after he was caught stealing supplies, but he was carried off (and presumably eaten) by a buzzard shortly thereafter. (LH)
JIBSNOUT. Large male searat in Raga Bol's crew. He was skilled as a tracker. He was secretly killed by Raga Bol for delivering the news that Lonna Bowstripe still lived. (LH)
JIGGER. Male shrew. Eldest son of Briggy. Plays the shrewlodeon. Had a crush on Springald. (LH)
JUPPA. Female weasel in the same vermin band as Burrad and Badredd. Mate of Slipback. A skilled cook. She was among those who fled southward with Flinky after the debacle with Raga Bol at Redwall. (LH)
JUNTY. Male hedgehog. Cellarkeeper of Redwall. He played the fiddle. He was killed by Badredd's vermin and buried under the floorstones in the Abbey cellar. (LH)

KHARANJUL. Descendant of the Wearet from Malkariss' kingdom (see Mattimeo). He was a huge, earless and neckless creature--a cross between a ferret and a weasel, perhaps. He had curving, discolored fangs and carried an iron trident. He was leader of a group of ferrets, weasels and some large rats. His "kingdom" was in the caves and ledges of the great gorge, below the Lord of Mossflower bridge. His fanatical followers showed their allegiance by daubing themselves in a yellow-green dye. He and his followers were killed when Saro and Bragoon pushed the bridge into the abyss of the great gorge. Kharanjul's titles included "Great Wearet Lord," "Master of the Abyss," "Great Slayer" and "Lord of Life and Death." (LH)

LINFA, SISTER. Author of a poem in the Redwall Abbey Gatehouse entitled "The Loamhedge Lament." (LH)

LOAMHEDGE. Novel by Brian Jacques. 2003. Redwallers go in search of the ancient abbey of Loamhedge, seeking a cure for a crippled young hare named Martha. Meanwhile, searats and a band of wandering vermin cause trouble back at at Redwall.LOAMHEDGE. Abbey to the south of Mossflower. The community was nearly as large as Redwall. It was abandoned due to a plague brought by vermin, and many years later was destroyed in an earthquake. Its first Abbess was Sylvaticus, and its last was Abbess Germaine. Survivors of the plague traveled north to Mossflower, where they met Martin the Warrior and founded Redwall Abbey. (MF, MT, LH)
"LOAMHEDGE LAMENT, THE." Poem written by Sister Linfa, telling of the plague that forced the abandonment of Loamhedge. (LH)
LOG-A-LOG. Title given to shrew chieftains. See also Briggy.
LONG TAILS. Tribe of primitive vermin living in the pine forest near the ruins of Loamhedge. They were later driven into the desert south of the great gorge by the grandfather of Log-a-Log Briggy. (MT, LH)
LONNA BOWSTRIPE. Gigantic male badger. He never knew his parents, and was raised by Grawn. He was said to have been "a fussy babe." He possessed the gift of a Seer, something very few badgers can boast. He was also amazingly skilled with a bow and arrow. He had dark eyes, and after a near-fatal encounter with Raga Bol he had a jagged scar lengthwise across his face. He wore a simple, rust-hued smock and a woven sash. He is fond of Dibbuns. After defeating Raga Bol and his crew at Redwall, he went on to become Lord of Salamandastron. (LH)
LORD OF MOSSFLOWER. Giant, ancient fir tree near the ruins of Loamhedge. Sometime between the abbotships of Mordalfus and Carrul the tree fell, and became a natural bridge across the great gorge. It was knocked into the abyss by Bragoon and Saro. (MT, LH)

MARINU. Female sea otter living on the coast of northeastern Mossflower. Wife of Abruc, mother of Stugg. Respected as a skilled healer. (LH)
MARTHA BRAEBUCK. Female mountain hare. Sister of Hortwill. They and their grandmother were the only survivors of a vermin attack on their colony. Their grandmother took them to Redwall just before she died. Martha was just an infant at the time, and never learned to walk, apparently from the trauma of her early life. She used a wheelchair to get around and was a "formidable reader and scholar." She suddenly gained the ability to walk in a moment of panic, saving Abbot Carrul from Raga Bol's searats. After that she left her wheelchair behind, and even learned to dance. (LH)
MATTHIAS THE WARRIOR. Redwall champion during the Late Rose Summer Wars. Father of Mattimeo. (RW, MT, GF)
MATTIMEO. (Full name Matthias Methuselah Mortimer.) Son of Matthias. (RW, MT)
MILDUN. Old mousewife of Redwall who is prone to hysterics in frightening situations. (LH)
MOSSFLOWER. Forest that runs along the east side of the North Path. Numerous streams run through it.
MUGGUM. Male mole Dibbun of Redwall. With his friends Yooch and Shilly, he was referred to as part of "The Terrible Trio." He later grew up to become the Abbey's cellarkeeper. (LH)

ORMEL, SISTER. Old female mouse of Redwall who sang lullabies to Dibbuns. She died three seasons before Bragoon and Saro returned to the Abbey. (LH)

PHREDD, ABBOT. Extremely old, skinny male hedgehog. He was Abbot once, but abdicated to Carrul and retired to become Abbey Gatekeeper. He was regarded as the oldest hedgehog in Mossflower country. He frequently carried on conversations with inanimate objects but was beloved by all. He later shared Gatekeeper duties with Carrul when the latter retired. He died of natural causes nine seasons after Raga Bol's attacks on Redwall. (LH)
PLUMNOSE. Male ferret in the same vermin band as Burrad and Badredd. He had a large, wobbly nose that made him speak oddly but which gave him a great sense of smell that made him a skilled tracker. He was friends with Halfchop. (LH)
PORTULA, SISTER. Old female mouse. Served as Redwall's Recorder. Friends with Carrul since Dibbunhood. (LH)

RAGA BOL. Tall, sinewy, green-eyed male searat. Wears hooped brass earrings, carries a scimitar, and has gold-plated fangs. His ship was wrecked on the coast of north-east Mossflower, where he then lost his left paw in battle with Lonna Bowstripe. The missing paw was replaced with a silver hook. He later laid siege to Redwall. He was accidentally killed by four spears thrown by his own crew--not that it mattered much since Lonna Bowstripe had him in a death grip at the time! (LH)
RAKKAW RAVIN. Large raven who terrorized Figalok's tribe of squirrels. Killed by Lonna. (LH)

REDWALL ABBEY. Large red sandstone structure located between Mossflower woods and the main north road. Surrounded by tall walls. Major areas within the walls are: the gatehouse, bell tower, orchard, pond, Great Hall, Cavern Hole, infirmary, cellar, kitchens, Warbeak Loft. Built from red sandstone from a quarry north-east of the abbey. Founded by Abbess Germaine of Loamhedge and Martin the Warrior.

SALAMANDASTRON. Extinct volcano that has been made into a fortress to guard the seashore. Generations of Badger Lords have ruled the mountain, with the help of the hares of the Long Patrol.
SAROBANDO (SARO). Female squirrel. She was best friends with Bragoon since Dibbunhood, and in fact was born on the same day as he, one hour before him. The two caused legendary mischief while growing up at Redwall. She spent most of her life traveling and adventuring with Bragoon and accompanied him on the quest to Loamhedge.
