A

ALFO THE ELDER.  Fat, old male shrew whose fur is grey with age.  He is the leader of a band of Guosssom shrews on the Great South Stream.  He prides himself on being more civilized than the average shrew.  He joined Log-a-Log in helping to defeat the horde of Ferahgo and free Salamandastron.  (SN)

ARULA.  Female mole of Redwall.  Orphan.   Grandmother of Burrem.  She was best friends with Samkim and went questing with him to recover the Sword of Martin.  She wore a beret and tunic.  (SN)

ASHNIN. Cranky old female squirrel living on the big island in the Big Inland Lake.  She once had red fur, but turned almost completely grey with age.  She is a very accurate archer.  She was once a slave of wandering foxes until Loambudd rescued her.  When Loambudd and Urthwyte went from their island to Salamandastron, she accompanied them. AUTUMN OF THE HOMECOMERS. Season when Mara came to Redwall and Samkin and Arula returned. (SN)

B

BADTOOTH.  Large, fat stoat.   Captain in Ferahgo’s army. (SN)

BARFLE. Salamandastron hare. (SN)

BART THISTLEDOWN.  Small, wiry male hare of the Westshore Thistledowns.  An archer in the Salamandastron Long Patrol.  Nicknamed Barty.  (SN)

BATEYE.  Male ferret soldier in Ferahgo's army.   He was fairly old and has bad teeth.  (SN)

BELLOWS, FRIAR.  Very fat male mouse.  Head cook of Redwall.  Had Dryditch Fever. (SN)

BIG INLAND LAKE. Large body of water in the South-east, east of the South Path. There is a sizeable island far out in the lake. (SN)

BIG OXEYE. (See Oxeye.)

BLACKSTONE. Sacred stone of the Guosim/Guosssom. Only the one holding this stone has permission to speak. Lost by Nordo in the Big Inland Lake when he was scared by Urthwyte. Later recovered by Mara and the Guosssom. Possession of the stone is the Log-a-Log's privilege. (RW, SN)

BLITCH.  Fox in the same band as Ringworm and Splidge.  They harass travellers on the North Path, and tried to attack Thrugg and Dumble on their journey to the mountains.  (SN)

BLOODWRATH. Killing rage that comes upon badger warriors.

BLOSSOM.  Redwall mousemaid.  Sister of Turzel.  Had Dryditch Fever.  (SN)

BLUESTRIPE THE WILD.  An ancient Badger Lord of Salamandastron.

BOAR THE FIGHTER.  Male badger.  Son of Brocktree, husband of Bella, father of Sunflash.  Lord of Salamandastron during the days of Martin the Warrior.  (BT, MF, OR)

BOWLEY.  Male shrew.  He was the cook in Log-a-Log's Guosssom tribe. (SN)

BREMMUN.  Strict old male squirrel of Redwall Abbey. Died of Dryditch Fever. (SN)

BRINKLE.  Young hedgehog of Redwall.  Had Dryditch Fever.  (SN)

BROCKTREE, OLD LORD. Father of Boar, grandfather of Bella, great-grandfather of Sunflash. Entombed in a secret chamber in Salamandastron.  (BT; Mentioned in MF, OR, SN)

BURREM. Mole. Grandson of Arula. To whom Salamandastron was told. (SN)

BURRLEY.  Small male mole who worked in the Redwall cellars.  Uncle of Droony.  Died of Dryditch Fever. (SN)

CATKIN. Hare of the Salamandastron Long Patrol. (SN)

CAVERN HOLE.  Cozy, informal meeting and dining area in Redwall Abbey, down from Great Hall.

CETERULER THE WISE.  An ancient Badger Lord of Salamandastron.

CLARENCE AND CLARISSA. Two young rabbit siblings who like to scare travelers by pretending to be creatures named Fangslayer and Deatheye.   They live with their mother in a burrow in Mossflower woods.  (SN)

CORPSEMAKERS. Nickname for Ferahgo’s army. (SN)

CRABEYES.  Shifty-eyed male rat.   Captain in Ferahgo’s army.  Also a former searat.  (SN)

DARK FOREST. The afterlife.

DEEPCOILER.  Monster that lived in the Big Inland Lake. Killed by the Sword of Martin. (SN)

DETHBRUSH.  Male fox.  Soldier in Ferahgo's horde.  He tracked Dingeye and Thura across Mossflower, and took the Sword of Martin from Dingeye when he beheaded him.  He was killed by the Deepcoiler.   (SN)

DEWNOSE.  Stoat Captain in Ferahgo’s army. (SN)

DIBBUNS. Infants at Redwall Abbey.

DINGEYE.  Male stoat.  He deserted Ferahgo's horde with Thura and wandered Mossflower until they ended up at Redwall Abbey.   When they fled from the Abbey he stole Martin's sword.  He was later beheaded by Dethbrush in Mossflower woods. (SN)

DOGHEAD.  Male stoat.  Captain in Ferahgo’s army. (SN)

DRAGTAIL. Tall, gaunt male ferret with a limp tail.   Soldier and archer in Ferahgo’s army. He was killed in battle at Salamandastron by an arrow. (SN)

DROONY.  Male Dibbun mole of Redwall.  Nephew of Burrley.  He had Dryditch fever.  He later became an apprentice to Tudd Spinney in the abbey cellars. (SN)

DRYDITCH FEVER. Sickness accompanied with high fever, weakness, and chills. Caused an epidemic at Redwall. The only known cure is the Flowers of Icetor, found in the north mountains. (SN)

DUMBLE. Male Dibbun dormouse of Redwall.   He went with Thrugg to seek out the Flowers of Icetor. As an adult he always slept outside in the abbey orchard in case his eagle and falcon friends returned for a visit.   He later told the story of Salamandastron to Arula's grandson, Burrem. (SN)

 

DWING.  Fat shrew in Alfoh's Guosssom band. Cousin of Nordo. (SN)

EULALIA. War cry of badgers and hares, especially those associated with Salamandastron.

F

FAITH SPINNEY.  Female hedgehog of Redwall Abbey.  Wife of Tudd. Close friend of Abbess Vale.  She wears spectacles while embroidering.  (SN)

FARRAN THE POISONER.  Male black fox with pale, amber eyes.  Nobeast ever heard him speak.  He wore an adderskin belt from which hung batskin pouches of poisons.  He was not a member of Ferahgo's horde, but followed them from a distance, sometimes working for Ferahgo when the price was right.  Ferahgo sent him into Salamandastron to poison the food and water supplies.   He succeeded in this but was killed by Urthstripe. (SN)

 

FEADLE.  Male weasel. Soldier often assigned to sentry duty in Ferahgo's horde. Killed by Ferahgo for letting Oxeye and Sapwood escape. (SN)

FERAHGO THE ASSASSIN.  Male weasel. Father of Klitch.  He had sparkling blue eyes and a charming smile, but was a ruthless warlord.  He wore a broad belt, a short kilt of skins, and crossbelts diagonally across his chest.  He always carried numerous knives, which he could throw with deadly accuracy.  He was also skilled with a mace and chain.  Early in his career as a warlord, he killed Urthhound and Urthrun to conquer the Southwest Lands.   Later he and his son pressed northward in search of the rumored badger treasure within Salamandastron.  His relationship with Klitch was an uneasy mix of mentor/protege and insult-ridden rivalry, but he was still grudgingly proud of his cunning offspring and allowed him some command over the horde.  During the war Ferahgo was injured by boiling water but quickly recovered, eventually breaking the great mountain fortress.  His victory was short-lived, however, for reinforcements arrived in the form of Loambudd, Samkim, Mara and the Guosssom.  He was killed when a mortally-wounded Urthstripe leapt from the top of Salamandastron's crater while gripping the weasel to him. FLIGG.  Guosssom shrew.  (SN)

FLOWERS OF ICETOR. The only known cure for Dryditch Fever, these flowers are found only in the north mountains near the eyrie of King MacPhearsome.  They are small, white and starlike with blue-tinged petals. (SN)

FORBUN. Guosssom shrew.  Father of twins. Married to Tubgutt's sister. (SN)

FOREMOLE. Title given to the leader of the Redwall moles.

FORGRIN.  Male fox.  Soldier in Ferahgo's army. Carries a rapier.  Her plotted to kill Ferahgo, but the weasel chieftan killed him first. (SN)

FRANG.  Male ferret in Ferahgo’s army. (SN)

FURGLE THE HERMIT.  Small, thin, elderly woodvole with a bushy white beard.  He lived alone in Mossflower woods near Redwall Abbey.   He wore a long smock of brown barkcloth.  His knowledge of Dryditch Fever and the Flowers of Icetor were invaluable to Redwall Abbey during the plague.  He said he had never been sick a day in his life. G

GLAGWEB, KING.  Male toad with red eyes, covered in yellow warts on slime-green skin.  Leader of a tribe of cannibal toads east of Salamandastron. Carries a trident.  He was last seen imprisoned in a pit with a pike after being defeated by the Guosssom.  (SN)

 

GOFFA.  Young, shifty-looking male ferret in Ferahgo's army. Friend of Klitch. He wore a long tunic that had been cut down to fit him, with a rope belt.  He was killed outside Salamandastron by a giant arrow fired by Urthstripe. (SN)

GREAT HALL. Large meeting area in Redwall Abbey. Inside is a large tapestry chronicling the abbey's history.

GREAT SOUTH STREAM. Runs through south Mossflower Woods and empties into the Big Inland Lake. (MF, SN)

GRUNEL.  Mole of Redwall.  (SN)

GUOSSSOM. Guerilla Union of South Stream Shrews in Mossflower.  An offshoot of the more familiar Guosim.  Their leader, called the Log-a-Log, holds the Blackstone as a mark of rank.  (SN)

H

HAL, BROTHER.  Male mouse of Redwall.   Abbey Recorder and historian.  He was accidentally killed by an arrow fired by Dingeye and Thura. (SN)

 

HOLLYBERRY, BROTHER.  Kindly male mouse of Redwall.  He was known as an especially mischieveous Dibbun.  He was the keeper of the abbey Infirmary, and slept there in an armchair.  He had Dryditch Fever. (SN)

HOTROOT SOUP. Favorite dish of otters. Spicy.

JOSEPH BELL.  Giant bell of Redwall.  Made of copper, silver, brass and gold and adorned with carvings of badger runes.  It was made by Joseph the Bellmaker.

K

KLITCH.  Young male weasel.  Son of Ferahgo.  Like his father, he had striking blue eyes.  He wore a yellow tunic with a woven belt and thick bone bracelets.  He was often cocky and overconfident and teased Ferahgo for being past his prime.  He had the potential to became as great a warlord as his father, once the brashness of youth wore off, but he never got the chance.   He died after drinking poisoned water in Salamandastron. (SN)

LAIRD MACTALON. (See Mactalon, Laird.)

LEAFLAD.  Male wren.  Friend of the Guosssom.   (SN)

LINGFUR. Young male Salamandastron hare. (SN)

LOAMBUDD.  Female badger.  Wife of Urthclaw, mother of Urthhound and Urthrun, grandmother of Urthstripe and Urthwyte.   She was a mighty fighter in her younger days.  After Ferahgo conquered the Southwest Lands she took Urthwyte and fled eastward.  She and Ashnin came to live on the island in the Big Inland Lake with Urthwyte.  When Salamandastron was under siege by the forces of Ferahgo, she traveled there to assist.  She did not arrive in time to save Urthstripe's life, but she stayed on to help her other grandson, Urthwyte, rule the mountain.  (SN)

LOG-A-LOG. Title given to shrew leaders.

LOG-A-LOG.  Male shrew.  Nordo is his only son.   Leader of the Guosssom.  His father was also Log-a-Log.  (SN)

LONG PATROL. Elite fighting force of hares at Salamandastron.

M

MACPHEARSOME, WILD KING. Giant male golden eagle living the in the Mountains of the North.  Guardian of the Flowers of Icetor.   He speaks with a thick high northern accent.  He was known as unpredictable and savage, but became a valuable ally of the Redwallers.  (SN)

MACTALON, LAIRD.  Male falcon.  Rocangus is his only son.  Laird of the High Crags. (SN)  

MARA. Young female badger.  Adopted daughter of Urthstripe.  Best friend of Pikkle.  Urthstripe found her as orphan near Salamandastron and raised her as his own, giving her the nickname "Browneyes."   After running away from home in a fit of youthful rebellion and encountering many adventures and dangers, she came to be the badger mother of Redwall. MARTIN THE WARRIOR. The central figure of the Redwall series. Male mouse with brown fur.  He was a great warrior from the far north who helped to free Mossflower from the reign of cruel wildcats.  He was severely wounded in the battle but survived. He then hung up his sword and led a life of peace, becoming Redwall Abbey’s co-founder with Abbess Germaine.  He presumably died of old age (there is no evidence to the contrary,) and was buried in a tomb beneath the Abbey.  His ghost sometimes appears in dreams and visions to offer advice to troubled Redwallers. MELLUS.  Female badger.  Guardian of Redwall.   She passed away quite some time before Mara came to Redwall to succeed her as abbey guardian.  (MR, BM)

MIGROO.  Male stoat.  He was one of the first to join Ferahgo's horde, back when he conquered the Southwest Lands.  Ferahgo once cut off his ear as punishment.  He was killed by Big Oxeye. (SN)

MOLLO.  Young male shrew in Alfoh's Guosssom tribe.   (SN)

MOONPAW. Female hare of the Salamandastron Long Patrol.   She was killed defending a starwell in Salamandastron from Ferahgo's forces. (SN)

N

NASTURTIUM, SISTER.  Pretty, plump female mouse.  She was very popular with the Dibbuns and known for a nice singing voice.  She helped Bellows in the abbey kitchens.  She frequently received messages from Martin in the form of poems and songs.  She had Dryditch Fever. (SN)

NORDO.  Male shrew.  Only son of the Log-a-Log of the Guosssom.  His grandfather was also a Log-a-Log.  When he was very young he accidentally lost the Blackstone on the island in the Great Inland Lake.  He was also held captive in a pit by King Glagweb with forty other shrews, but his father rescued him. OTTER AND HIS WIFE. Rock sculpture on the North Path north of the River Moss. (MR, SN)

OXEYE, LIEUTENANT.  Male hare of the Salamandastron Long Patrol.  Also known as "Big Oxeye" due to his huge stature.  He was one season older than his comrade Sapwood.  He was captured by Ferahgo's horde, but escaped. (SN)

P

PENNYBRIGHT. Young female hare in the Salamandastron Long Patrol.  She is skilled with both a bow and arrows and a javelin. (SN)

PIKKLE FFOLGER. Young male hare from Salamandastron.  He and his best friend, Mara, went questing from Salamandastron and eventually came to settle at Redwall.  He had an incredible appetite, even for a hare. (SN)

RANTACLAW. Falcon in Mactalon's clan who helped escort Thrugg back to Redwall. (SN)

RAPTAIL. Searat soldier in Ferahgo's army. Archer.   He was killed by Ferahgo after killing Sickear in an attempted mutiny. (SN)

REDWALL ABBEY. Large red sandstone structure located between Mossflower woods and the main north road. Surrounded by tall walls. Major areas within the walls are: the gatehouse, bell tower, orchard, pond, Great Hall, Cavern Hole, infirmary, cellar, kitchens, Warbeak Loft. Built from red sandstone from a quarry north-east of the abbey. Founded by Abbess Germaine of Loamhedge and Martin the Warrior.

RINGWORM.  Male fox in the same band as Splidge and Blitch.  They harass travellers on the North Path, and tried to attack Thrugg and Dumble on their journey to the mountains.  (SN)

RIVAK. Guosssom shrew. (SN)

RIVER MOSS. Runs from north-east of Redwall Abbey, north of the abbey, and empties into the ocean north of Salamandastron. Pikes live in the ford where the river crosses the North Path.

ROCANGUS. Young male falcon. The only son of Laird Mactalon. He speaks with a thick high northern accent.  He befriended Thrugg and Dumble of Redwall when they helped him with a broken wing.  (SN)  

RUFE BRUSH.  (Also known as Rufe Brushtail.)  Male squirrel.  He was Redwall Abbey's first bellringer.  He took Martin's sword to the Abbey roof after Dandin returned from Terramort. (MR, BM)

RUNGLE.  Guosssom shrew.  (SN)

SALAMANDASTRON. By Brian Jacques, 1993. Salamandastron is under siege, young beasts go questing, and Redwall is plagued by a deadly fever.

SALAMANDASTRON. Extinct volcano that has been made into a fortress to guard the seashore. Generations of Badger Lords have ruled the mountain, with the help of the hares of the Long Patrol.

SAINT NINIAN'S CHURCH.  Ancient building to the south of Redwall Abbey, on the east side of the road.

SAMKIM.  Orphaned young male squirrel from Redwall.  He was skilled with a bow and arrow, and also became adept wielding the Sword of Martin.  He wore a soft green cloth tunic and a beret with a wren feather in it.  He and his best friend Arula went on a quest to retreive Martin's sword after it was stolen and ended up also helping to defeat Ferahgo at Salamandastron. SAPWOOD.  Male hare.  Sergeant in the Long Patrol at Salamandastron.  Longtime friend of Urthstripe.  He liked to shadowbox and was a strong swimmer.  He pronounced words with extra Hs in them.  He was one season older than his comrade, Oxeye.  He was captured by Ferahgo's horde, but escaped. (SN)

SAXTUS, ABBOT.  Male mouse.  Leader of Redwall before Abbess Vale.  (MR, BM)

SEAWOOD. Hare of the Salamandastron Long Patrol with skill as a healer. (SN)

SHOREBUCK.  Very young male hare of the Salamandastron Long Patrol.  Uses slingstones. The clash with Ferahgo's army was his first--and only--batle.  He was poisoned by Farran. (SN)

SPEARLADY GORSE.  An ancient badger ruler of Salamandastron.

SPLIDGE. Fox in the same band as Ringworm and Blitch.   They harass travellers on the North Path, and tried to attack Thrugg and Dumble on their journey to the mountains.  (SN)

SPRIGGAT. Old male hedgehog.  He was an avid insectivore and especially loved to eat wasps.  He lived in Mossflower woods south of Redwall.  He was an excellent tracker and joined Samkin and Arula on their quest to recover the Sword of Martin.  He was mortally wounded by the Deepcoiler. (SN)

STARBOB.  Male hare of the Salamandastron Long Patrol.  Archer.  (SN)

SUMMER OF THE LAZY TROUT.  Season in which Dryditch Fever struck Redwall Abbey.  (SN)

SUNSTRIPE THE MACE.  Also known as Sunflash the Mace.   Male badger. Great-grandson of Brocktree, grandson of Boar, son of Bella and Barkstripe.  A Lord of Salamandastron.  (MF, OR) 

SWINKEE.  Male sand lizard with a bright yellow stomach who lived in the dunes near Salamandastron.  He turned Mara and Pikkle over to cannibal toads after they unknowingly upset his home. (SN)

SWORD OF MARTIN THE WARRIOR. Used to belong to Martin’s father, Luke. Stolen by Badrang, but recovered by Martin. Broken by Tsarmina, reforged from meteorite metal by Boar the Fighter. Later wielded by Samkin, and many other Redwall heroes.

TAMMBEAK.  Male falcon in Mactalon’s clan who helped escort Thrugg back to Redwall. (SN)

THRUGAN.  Playlful female otter of Redwall.   Sister of Thrugg.  (SN)

THRUGG.  Male otter of Redwall.  Brother of Thrugan.  He and Dumble traveled north to find the Flowers of Icetor to stop the plague of Dryditch Fever at Redwall. (SN)

THURA.  Male stoat.  He deserted Ferahgo's horde with Dingeye and wandered Mossflower until they ended up at Redwall Abbey.  He died of Dryditch Fever in Mossflower woods shortly after fleeing the abbey.  (SN)

TUBGUTT. Male Guossom shrew with an enormous appetite.  His sister is married to Forbun.  He tried to stage a mutiny against Log-a-Log on the Great Inland Lake, but after Mara saved his life from the Deepcoiler he turned around his attitude and became fiercely loyal.  (SN)

TUDD SPINNEY.  Male hedgehog of Redwall.   Husband of Faith.  He walks with a limp and a walking stick.  He had Dryditch Fever. (SN)

TURZEL. Young mousemaid of Redwall. Sister of Blossom. Had Dryditch Fever. (SN)

URTHCLAW.  Male badger.   Husband of Loambudd, father of Urthhound, grandfather of Urthwyte and Urthstripe.   He lived in the Southwest Lands but had already been dead for many seasons when Urthstripe and Urthwyte were born.  (SN)

URTHOUND.  Male badger.  Son of Loambudd and Urthclaw, husband of Urthrun and father of Urthstripe and Urthwyte.  He was known a very strong and wise.  He was the ruler of the Southwest Lands before Ferahgo killed him and took his medallion. (SN)

URTHRUN.  Female badger.  Wife of Urthhound and mother of Urthstripe and Urthwyte. She lived in the Southwest Lands and was known for her great beauty and gentleness.  She was killed by Ferahgo at her husband's side, just one season after giving birth to the twins. (SN)

URTHSTRIPE THE STRONG.  Male badger. Grandson of Loambudd and Urthclaw, son of Urthound and Urthrun, twin brother of Urthwyte, adoptive father of Mara.  He was born in the autumn in the Southwest Lands but was orphaned just one season later.  He went on to become Lord of Salamandastron.  He was a fearsome warrior plagued by Bloodwrath.   He carried a huge spear with a leaf-shaped blade and barbed crosstrees.  He died in battle against Ferahgo's horde, but managed to take Ferahgo with him by jumping from the top of Salamandastron while holding onto the weasel. URTHWYTE THE MIGHTY.  Albino male badger. Grandson of Loambudd and Urthclaw, son of Urthhound and Urthrun, twin brother of Urthstripe.  He was a bit simple-minded but very strong and kind.  He carried an oaken war club.  He was born in the autumn in the Southwest Lands but was orphaned less than a season later.  His grandmother fled eastward with him, and he lived with Loambudd and Ashnin on the island in the Big Inland Lake for many years.  He later succeeded Urthstripe as Badger Lord of Salamandastron.  (SN)
